"And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for; the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about. I can understand why a system built on a pattern must try to destroy the free mind, for that is one thing which can by inspection destroy such a system. Surely I can understand this, and I hate it and I will fight against it to preserve the one thing that separates us from the uncreative beasts. If the glory can be killed, we are lost."
This might be one of my favorite holidays and you know why? Because there are no precedents on how much money must be spent or how nice something has to be. No. It’s about my grandmother’s turkey, my aunt’s sweet potato casserole, my mom’s mashed potatoes and my dad’s bread dressing. I can sit and joke with my cousin all afternoon even though he is 15 years older than me with three children. We can relate on so many levels to different people. Thought life can get crazy and seem too busy for the amount of time in a day, there’s always a table full of people willing to play cards for hours on end.
I love my family. Thanksgiving is more a celebration of that love to me.
Also, Happy National Turkey Sandwich Day tomorrow. Let all be merry and the stores not too scary.
